One of the initial pieces I discovered and valued the most was when I completed my application form. A specific question made me realize that Atlantic was the perfect fit for me. The query was something like, “What can you tell us about the words inclusion, diversity, equality?” This indicated to me that it would be a safe and conscientious place where I could be myself and feel welcomed.

Be the most prepared and most disciplined person in line at auditions.” Surely she wasn’t suggesting I attend acting school? How preposterous would that be! At the time, anything other than a college education seemed more like a post-lunch STEM class daydream than anything realistic.

## Classes
- [Technique Lab 1](https://atlanticactingschool.org/class/technique-lab-i/): An introduction to Practical Aesthetics, the Atlantic Technique. Learn how to analyze a scene, play the action truthfully, and maintain an emotional connection to your scene partner. Together this results in strong and compelling performance choices. Exercises will be drawn from Script Analysis and Moment Lab, two fundamental classes in the Atlantic training. Outside rehearsal time is required between the weekly classes.
- [Technique Lab 2](https://atlanticactingschool.org/class/technique-lab-2/): In this class, Script Analysis class students work on high stakes scenes, exploring the “As If” introduced in LVL I in greater depth in order to bring more bravery and vulnerability to their work and expand their actor’s range of expression. In Moment Lab students work on exercises involving beat changes and multiple person repetition. Outside rehearsal time is required between the weekly classes.
- [Technique Lab 3](https://atlanticactingschool.org/class/technique-lab-3/): The third and final class in the Technique series is an in-depth, advanced scene study class that focuses on implementing Practical Aesthetics within the rehearsal room.  Students are cast in scenes from great contemporary plays, which they rehearse through the duration of the course.  The instructor functions as director with the goal of discovering with students how we instill performance habits that help us to give our all, 8 shows a week, or 20 takes in a row. In addition to deep script analysis and heightened moment work, students enhance their ability to craft a scene by bettering their acting “chops” and finessing their performance through stagecraft, physical grounding, and impulse work.  Outside rehearsal time is required between the weekly classes.  The class culminates in a workshop presentation in one of our studios for an invited audience of students’ friends and families.
- [Beginners Acting Lab](https://atlanticactingschool.org/class/beginners-acting-lab/): This six-week acting course in our part time school is a perfect introduction to the Atlantic Technique. Students explore monologues and scenes, developing communication, public speaking, and performance skills. No experience is required.
- [Audition Lab](https://atlanticactingschool.org/class/audition-lab/): This advanced workshop is perfect for trained and serious actors looking to make the most of every in-person and self-tape audition. An opportunity to study with veteran film and TV casting director, Todd Thaler. You’ll learn all of Todd’s tips and techniques on how to deliver your absolute best work. This class sharpens and improves an actor’s on-camera skills, starting with demystifying the process including how not to self-sabotage.

## Courses
- [Styles](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/styles/): This course varies in topic from semester to semester, though its focus is always on a specific, uniquely demanding style in theater, film or television acting. Past courses have included: Comedy Styles, which focuses on a range of comedic specialties; Restoration, which focuses on Restoration-era drama; Television, which focuses on NYC-produced television series of varying genres and Webisodes and New Media, which focuses on emerging platforms of storytelling. Occasionally, this course is offered in a workshop format to augment another co-requisite class such as Shakespeare or Chekhov.
- [Speech](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/speech/): The first year of the acting conservatory program includes an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) with a concentration intentional and clear speech that serves the story. The importance of IPA fluency is stressed as a practical tool for ‘scoring’ classical text and learning dialects. During the second semester, poetry and Shakespearean sonnets are introduced as application opportunities for further skill development. Advanced Speech classes formally introduce dialect work and can include coaching on full-length productions.
- [Shakespeare](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/shakespeare/): A technical approach to Shakespeare immerses students in the nature and practice of poetry. Students learn to revolutionize the imagination and to investigate the experience of passion. Students are introduced to the foundational principles and tools of acting Shakespeare. Actors create a “score” as part of their preparation and use this technique to unlock the action and tactics embedded in every Shakespeare scene, exploring the tactical topography of the scene and responding organically to Shakespeare’s rich imagery.
- [On-Camera Auditions & Casting](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/on-camera-auditions-casting/): Professional Casting Directors examine how on-camera acting differs from acting for the stage. Students are videotaped as they work on prepared material. They explore on- and off- camera auditions, including: Monologues, Cold Readings, Audition Sides, Callbacks and the Interview Process. Students gain confidence and experience in front of the camera, as well as the necessary skills to aid them in winning the role.
- [Improv](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/improv/): Improvisation classes promote collaboration, inspire risk-taking, and build ensemble with the goal of introducing students to the essential games of short-form improv and the more intricate structures of long-form improv. Students are provided with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to perform with confidence in front of an audience or in an audition setting and leave the class with the ability to use improv as a tool in the rehearsal process.
- [Movement](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/movement/): The Laban/Bartenieff principles are used to explore, describe and analyze movement to promote physical clarity and specificity. The class is designed to develop body awareness, strength, flexibility, and to coach actors toward becoming more physically centered for ease and efficiency in movement. By the year’s end, movement exercises are applied to and explored in scene work.
- [Introduction to New York Theater](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/introduction-to-new-york-theater/): In this course, students examine the current landscape of the New York theater scene, investigating the artistic climate of Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off Broadway and regional productions. The course covers the history of New York Theater and traces its evolution over the past two hundred and fifty years. Since the mid-eighteenth century, professional theater has acted as the beating heart of New York culture. What influence does theater have on society? How do you design a contemporary season? What are the current staging trends and where are they heading? How has the commercial success of Broadway ebbed and flowed in recent decades and why? Students are asked to attend professional productions, enriching their experience in acting classes. Their thoughts and experiences provide a rich component to class discussion as we evaluate how theatrical motifs translate from the page to the stage.
- [Film Scene Study](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/film-scene-study/): Students learn to deepen their understanding of specificity with on-camera study. Students perform scenes in front of the camera and then watch the work with their peers. This class helps the acting conservatory student to understand the technical aspects of film-making and to develop the skills required when working in front of a camera.
- [Casting & Monologues](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/casting-and-monologues/): Students explore on- and off- camera auditions, including: Monologues, Cold Readings, Audition Sides, Callbacks and the Interview Process. By working with a professional casting director to examine how on-camera acting differs from acting for the stage, students gain confidence and experience in front of the camera, as well as the necessary skills to aid them in winning the role.
- [The Business of Acting](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/business/): Business class defines and demystifies how actors actually go about getting a job. This class looks at what function agents, managers, and casting directors fill and how actors engage with them. Students learn self-tape technique, prepare material including monologues, resumes, and headshots, and set realistic, achievable goals in order to effectively enter into the profession.
- [Voice](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/voice/): The first semester of the acting conservatory program focuses on creating a strong, flexible instrument to support active choices by employing Chuck Jones’ methodology. Various exercises strengthen and tone the muscles involved in making sound, release excess tension and focus concentration. The class also addresses issues regarding vocal health and the care and maintenance of the professional voice. Students finish the first semester with a dependable warm-up. In the second semester, exploration of the warm-up exercises continues, while various assignments put the voice into action using a wide range of material. Advance Voice classes introduce the work of Catherine Fitzmaurice and students working on full-length productions are supported with vocal coaching as they would on a professional production.
- [Moment Lab](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/moment-lab/): In Moment Lab, actors explore their potential to “act before they think.” They are readied to dive into the given circumstances of a play with impulsive freedom, curiosity, and dynamism. By prioritizing heightened presence, holistic listening, and brave intimacy in their acting, acting conservatory students learn to deepen and expand their improvisational skills, with and without text. The lab encourages the honest and specific connection to another actor in each and every moment of performance. Using Sanford Meisner’s Repetition exercise as a touchstone to practice heightened moment work, and drawing on ideas and philosophies from various performance aesthetics, actors will focus on the concept of “radical presence” in their acting via a range of exercises, etudes, improvisations, and short scenes, all integral to acting classes.

- [Suzuki & Viewpoints](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/suzuki-viewpoints/): The Suzuki Method is a rigorous physical and vocal discipline for actors created by Tadashi Suzuki and his company. Drawing on a unique combination of traditional and innovative forms, the training strives to restore the wholeness of the body as a tool for theatrical expression. The Viewpoints training is a technique of improvisation that was born out of the Post Modern dance era. In the Viewpoints training, actors explore elements of Time and Space, such as, tempo, repetition, gesture, shape, floor pattern and kinesthetic awareness. This exploration helps the actor to gain physical expressivity and to learn to build work as an ensemble. The Viewpoints training develops in an actor strength in movement, full body listening and the ability to follow a physical impulse.
- [Performance Technique](https://atlanticactingschool.org/courses/performance-technique/): The goal of the first year is to provide students with a set of physical habits that complement those learned in Script Analysis. The actors learn how to implement an analysis through improvisation-based exercises and scene work. The focus is on how to simplify acting and find the parallels between behavior in real life and behavior on the stage, bringing together skills learned in Moment Lab with those learned in Script Analysis. Advanced Performance Technique classes look to explore the integration of skills through their application to media-specific (such as film and television) or canon-specific (such as contemporary female playwrights) work.
